Street Fighter IV Madcat Controller Issues… Told Ya!

by vipeness on February 16th, 2009

On Jan 14th, 2009; I blogged about going to the official tournament for Street Fighter IV with PS3 and Capcom; and I reported that there was an issue with the controller when I was playing… check out this breaking news:

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/owners-report-mad-catz-sfiv-fightstick-defects/

Other users are reporting that the controller may fail to register certain directions on the stick or certain button presses, with at least one user reporting that the stick stopped registering all inputs entirely. Certain users have attributed the stuck joystick inputs to a metal washer that actually grinds away at the inner workings of the stick while in use.

You know, sometimes, there are issues, and I’ve always been very honest on any reviews or anything that I do when I blog on this site. I experienced the same issue a month and 4 days ago! I think there is a problem and it needs to be fixed.

Street Fighter IV Exclusive 1st Time Console Photos and Video Gameplay and Tournament [PS3 vs. 360]

by vipeness on January 12th, 2009

** UPDATE: PS3 won the console war vs. 360 at the tournament!!!
- howdy shoryuken.com visitors; if you aren’t from there… head there for all your up-to-date street fighter appetite on the net.

I would like to say thank you to Capcom and Playstation for the hospitality they showed for all the players today. They put together an awesome event for players around the globe to compete in a tournament and bring their best movies and play Street Fighter IV on consoles for the first time. About 50+ players showed up wanting to see Street Fighter 4 for the first time, and to play in the tournament. We all crammed into the large suite at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, NV and begun our SF fantasies.

Pizza, Soda’s, Beers! Capcom and Sony Rock!!!; They took care of all our meals and made sure we had as much fun as we could possible get out of Street Fighter 4. The Capcom representative also demo’d off the inside of the 360 controller for Street Fighter and gave out some specs. (Price is still the same as it would be if you ordered it; Capcom has stated that they will not have replacement parts and not really wanting the users to mod the controller in any way; but they will give you a template to design your own design on your controller.)

First and Foremost; Street Fighter IV on PS3 is just like the arcades. It didn’t feel like I was playing on a console at all. The stations were setup awesomely and felt right. The controller, which I did not like; but others did were at every station and lined with research PS3 consoles. The one funny joke of the day, was the trophy system tell everyone, they didn’t earn a trophy at the top right screen. You can see that from the video below. Every time we would make a move, we would say; You really didn’t earn that. Back to the controller; The controller to me was too small for the handle. I couldn’t do my normal combos, uppercuts and fireballs with any characters. If Capcom can make it where I can install a standard edition handle, the stick would be awesome. I’ve been playing games and arcades for over 23 years; so I know how and what stick feel like; I just wasn’t feeling this controller.

TEASER VIDEO – Full video coming later today!!! (Jan. 11th 2009) with Capcom Announcements and behind the scenes of this event with new gameplay.

Crysis; Very High 16xAA.. my machine 42FPS?

crysis-TGS

Well, I was just as surprised as everyone else. I was called a LIAR, demand demand demand left and right and I provided video, and screenshots. Well, I’ve kept it off the frontpage of thegamershow.com, but I’m now going to post it.

I’ve created a quick page on thegamershow.com that shows off the video that I made to prove that the regular Crysis game, with all the patches applied runs on my machine pretty damn good… average 42 fps. The page as a video and screenshots included

Crysis Warhead does not have DRM (Install Limits)

by vipeness on September 15th, 2008

Well, overlooking the manual with 3 buddies; it seems that Crysis Warhead does not have DRM. Yep; in the manual, it does not have anywhere about Install Limits. Now, it could have securom still; but judging from the manual… no drm on INSTALL limits are mentioned.

The only thing that the manual states:

" The CD key is only required when starting an online game using the Crysis Wars disc. Both Crysis Warhead and Crysis Wars require separate installs using their respective discs. "

30153_CrysisWarheadBoxCrop

I hope that inserting the disk into the drive when the game comes out that it is completely 100% DRM free.

If so… Thank You EA! Looks like you have a customer back.

My name is not allowed in Hot Shots Golf ONLINE on PS3… read below

by vipeness on August 13th, 2008

.

helpsony

link to playstation 3 forum post

(please forgive the typos as I’m very tired right now) sorry

I have been under a lot of stress lately as a gamer. The only reason I state this, is when I got my PS3, it was for a few hot titles.

The one title that I’m speaking about is Hot Shot Golf on the PS3. I play this game all the time but when the game first came out,I got it at my local gamestop the moment they opened. I get home and play the game. Everything is fine. I even get my buddies to get the game too so we can play online together. As normal, I’m the host for pretty much all the games. So we all get in the same lobby and I created a default game. After creating a game, I get to the screen where it says join room, after I enter my room, I get booted from making my own online games. I get greeted with Cannot Make Online Room. It’s a PS3 system message. OK, so I try again and same thing. So I called Sony to see what the issue was.

I’m fairly familiar with networks, pcs, and other electronical devices enough to land a job in a very high volume IT job managing 300 computers. So My knowledge is great for this kind of stuff, and I walk through the steps with the PS3 technical support.

I follow the turn off machine, turn off cable modem, router the entire steps to verify I have an internet connection. After explaining calmly that I have completed the tests and that this is the only game that will not allow me to create a room for friends to play, they ask about the disk quality. I said that everything is fine, that I keep all my equipment very clean and in a non-destructive manner and everything I have is in brand new condition.

After walking through numerous tech support, the operator says it is my internet. I explain that I would like to speak to a supervisor in charge that can help me. I finally get to speak with a supervisor and they had no idea what the issue was. I explained that I could not create an online game for friends to join on Hot Shots Golf on the PS3. I also explain all the steps that I have gone through and explain that plugging the PS3 directly into the modem itself still does not fix the issue. I am then told to wait for a patch for the game. Please keep in mind, this was at the time the game was first released.

After 2 patches and 10 phone calls of the same exact issue, I now arrive here. I just called Sony again to be passed from a tech support agent, to supervisor, to a manager. The manager explained that the game was made by Sony and that they cover it, but the only thing he could help me with was Tips and Codes. I told him this has been an ongoing issue for some time now and it has never been resolved.
Now I explain to the manager that during a time that I played World of Warcraft, my screen name was banned from the game due to pornographic / sexual content. During that time, it took me over 1 1/2 months to get the issue straighten out and my name was allowed back to my character. This was after I had actually called Blizzard Ent. themselves and go through the operator and got myself to a game designer for World of Warcraft. He was able to get it straighten out very quickly after explaining to him about my name and how long I have had it. I have had my nickname for over 16+ years and even have a .com as well. I tried going into professional gaming, but I had my first son, and I decided to only play for fun. My .com is vipeness.com    My nickname is VipeNess.   The reason my name was banned, because someone that I killed in the World of Warcraft, I killed them 10 times in 1 night, no ganking or anything, just kept running into me reported my name as sexual and World of Warcraft admins saw in my name what resembled the word " p%$#$ " ha ha get it out now. Was news to me after talking to the game designer. Well, I had shown them proof that the name was not meant for that, it was lifted after explaining my history.

Now this is where it gets deeper. After doing a custom firmware update to my router, and trying it out again, I was still not able to create a game. I then called one more time, and got another manager. He explained it was my cable company blocking ports. Being the sucker, and being on the phone for 2 hours with the same processes all over again, I then call my ISP. And as you know it, they weren’t blocking any ports on my cable modem, even getting to the GUI interface of the modem itself. He explained to me, which I already knew that most companies play the cold call game and shift the customer back and forth until the customer gives up and doesn’t call anymore.

This is alot for a gamer to do for a game, but I love gaming and wanted to resolve this. I call Sony back again, (and keep in mind that I work so my work hours are from 12 to 15 hours a day and tech support to Sony is kind of hard to call at work) and get to another manager. I explain to him after all these months, that nothing has happened, no progress, and I explain to them again about my Blizzard story and he said… that SONY DOES NOT BLOCK NAMES especially MY NAME.
Well today, I was just sick of it, and made my wife an account on my PS3. Got her an account for the PSN, and tested out the Hot Shots Golf game and low and be hold, it WORKS! With much distressed, I call Sony and tell the manager that. He doesn’t believe me and says it is my ports AGAIN and that I need to call the tech support for my ISP. He was unable to handle anything and to email Sony on their website, which I have numerous amounts of time and with no luck, mostly automated messages, even when referencing to my case # through email. Just a heads up, case #’s thru email and tech support live are not the same.

So now I’m stuck, unable to do anything and if I want to play, I can not play with my name that I have had for 16+ years and don’t understand why no one will help me get to the bottom of this.. it’s very frustrating that Sony won’t give me any phone numbers, or real support for my issue, which I have figured out myself. My name " VipeNess " is not allowed on Hot Shots Golf, period! I can play everything else and make rooms, just not on Hot Shots Golf.

Can you please help me? I’ve run out of options and nothing else to do. Maybe a voice from someone can shed some light and point me in the right direction, besides changing my name. Please help and anything that any game dev can do would be awesome.

Firmware v2.40 status (Issues)

by vipeness on July 2nd, 2008

Taken from official Playstation blog; please take a minute to overlook the issues going on with the 2.40 update released last night.

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

The 2.40 Playstation 3 Firmware is here!

by vipeness on July 1st, 2008

The moment all Playstation 3 owners have been waiting for. The 2.40 firmware has been released today, Tuesday around 10:00 pm pst. Earlier than we thought, the download took about 5 minutes to download, and 5 minutes to install. From what I’ve seen so far, this looks to put the PS3 back in the game with their new trophy system. You could say a copy from the achievement system from the 360, but great things deserved to be followed, and Sony seemed to follow closely and carefully and seemed to make this a great new use for gamers on the PS3. Go to your Update Manager, and update now to 2.40. Here are some of the new features below you can now use.

Update: Super Stardust has patch that fully supports the new Trophy System

Here is some questions from the Playstation blog below
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/30/firmware-v240-faq/

Hi again! It’s great to see the positive reaction to the unveiling of system software update v2.40. We can’t wait for you to finally go hands-on with XMB access in-game and the Trophy system – and it’s less than 2 days away. Not surprisingly, a number of you have posed questions both here and on other forums. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future?

We are evaluating the opportunity to offer voice chat, but for this update, we wanted to focus on text messaging as the key priority for communications that our users have asked for.

Can you use the web browser in game?

No, you must exit the game before browsing the internet.

Will In-Game XMB come up during playback of PS2 games, Blu-Ray discs, and DVDs?

The XMB is an exclusive feature for PS3 game titles. Accessing the XMB during gameplay was the top request from our users, which we focused on for this update. However, we continually engage PS3 owners for feedback and will evaluate the opportunity to offer XMB access during movie playback in the future.

Can we go to the display settings and change anything there in-game (resolution, input, etc)?

No, you must exit the game before changing these settings.

Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?

Yes, sound output changes are supported.

Will we be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store while in-game?

No, but you can view your downloads in progress.

Will we be able to stream music (either via media server or USB drive) for custom soundtracks or is it relegated to music stored on the HDD?

Currently only music stored on the HDD is accessible in games that support this feature. We’d also like to reiterate that Firmware v2.40 merely enables custom soundtracks. It’s up to developers to include this feature in upcoming games (or to patch existing ones).

Does 2.4 enable cross game invites? Will it down the line?

No, cross-game invites are not available in this system software update. We are evaluating opportunities to expand on the new features delivered in 2.40.

Will trophies be mandatory for all games release here on out?

We are working with developers to ensure that Trophies are supported across the board in the future.

Where is each player’s trophy stat info held? I am going to upgrade my hard drive and I don’t know if the trophies will still be on my account if I earn some and then get a new hard drive.

Trophies will be attached to users’ PSN ID. Trophy data needs to be synchronized to the online account on PSN to be transferred to the new PS3 system.

Will the patch automatically allocate unlocked trophies according to your saved files or would you have to do it again?

No, Trophies aren’t retroactive.

Can we view PSN profiles/Trophies from a PC using a Web browser? Will there be an API for web developers to access the PSN data, so online profiles can be created?

We’re evaluating these opportunities to expand where Trophies can be experienced.

Can you only compare trophies with friends that are online?

As long as a friend has a PSN account, you can compare trophies with them regardless of their online status.

Is there a limit to how many trophies the devs can put set by Sony?

There’s not a limit on number of trophies, but there’s a value assigned to each trophy. Developers must balance out the trophies that are available to stay within an overall value based on whether the game is considered large-scope or small-scope. Essentially, a user that has unlocked every trophy in one game would have the same level as a user that unlocked every trophy in another title, all titles (depending on scope) have the same overall impact on a users’ level.

Will new games have a cool little icon on the back saying “trophy compatible?”

We’re currently working on how Trophy support will be messaged to the consumer on our software packaging.

When you get a trophy, does it make a noise?

Currently, no. How quickly things can change - there *will* be a sound effect when you unlock a Trophy.

    What is Eric’s favorite cheese?

Mozzarella

Once again, we will continue to evaluate opportunities to enhance the PLAYSTATION 3’s system software throughout the console’s life cycle. Consumer feedback has contributed greatly to the contents of Firmware v2.40, and continues to be appreciated. Don’t forget, this Firmware will be available for download on July 2nd.

Wednesday PS3 2.40 Details on PS3’s New Trophy System

by vipeness on June 30th, 2008

The Playstation 3 (PS3’s) 2.4 update (coming this Wednesday) will bring support for Sony’s take on Achievements: Trophies. The video above will give you a good look at update and what you can expect once you download 2.4 on wednesday. Also a new option in the Games area of the XMB, which will show all of your games, of course the ones that work with the new system and their Trophies. You’ll be able to select individual Trophies and see details on them, such as what you have to do to earn it, what value it is (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum), and when you unlocked it (if you already have, that is).

Lego Indiana Jones bundle deals

by misty on June 2nd, 2008

Indiana Jones

With the much anticipated release of the Lego Indiana Jones video game many stores are also giving away additional items.

At Best Buy for a limited time, you can get a perfect complement to the Lego game by purchasing one of the blockbuster Indiana Jones movie on DVD for $4.99.  Keep in mind you can only purchase 1 of the movies at the discounted prices but you do get a choice of which one. Available Tuesday June 3rd.

Circuit City is offering in limited quantities free unlockable Lego Belloq character and T-shirt with purchase.  Unfortunately the code does not apply to DS version of the game.  For Circuit City the game will not be available until after 2pm on Wednesday June 4th.

Target is giving away exclusive unlockable treasure magnet with the game and also with the purchase of Lego Indiana Jones you can save $5 on Lego Star Wars II or Complete Saga.  The game is available Tuesday June 3 at 8am.

Before heading to the stores I recommend calling and confirming they actually have the game in stock.  I know for quite awhile now games that are given a release date on Tuesday are now coming in on Wednesday which just gives you a headache when you go down and are told to come back another day.  Also although the Lego series are more for timid gamers or for non-gamers I would not be surprised to see this game go quick I know I’m looking forward to it.

Rumor: Wii-like PS3 controller used in focus test

by misty on June 2nd, 2008

Sony_Revolution2

According to ps3fanboy.com Playstation Lifestyle is claiming that a Wii-like PS3 controller was the subject of a secret PSU focus test. An e-mail sent back in January invited a few members of Sony’s invite-only group to join them for a paid focus test in ****** ****, California. (We’re assuming it’s Foster City, home of SCEA.)
The PS3 controllers were motion-sensitive and required use of a "mini-tripod that stood about 12 inches high." Mini-games, such as fencing, paintball and tennis were supposedly demonstrated. The devices were said to be "incredibly responsive and accurate."
While Sony does regularly conduct paid focus tests throughout the country, there simply isn’t enough tangible evidence to verify the authenticity of this rumor. If true, we wonder if PS3 fans really want more motion control in their lives … or does the SIXAXIS suffice?

XBLA Wednesdays: Aces of the Galaxy and Roogoo

by misty on June 2nd, 2008

june 4 release

According to teamxbox.com Microsoft announced today that this week’s Xbox Live arcade releases will be Aces of the Galaxy and Roogoo, which will be available this Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. GMT (1:00 a.m. PDT) for 800 Microsoft Points each.

3-2-1 blast off! Launch yourself into the intense space-shooter Aces of the Galaxy™, a non-stop, old-school arcade thrill-ride for the twenty-first century and beyond. Utilize an impressive arsenal of upgradeable weapons including high powered missile launchers, devastating torpedoes, and the ever-reliant chain gun to annihilate the ships of the wretched Skurgian Empire. Save planet Earth cooperatively at home with a friend or join up on Xbox LIVE®.

Roogoo updates the square peg in a round hole premise to a whole new level. Help the Roogoo defeat their enemies, the evil Meemoo, in Roogoo, a new and innovative action-based puzzler. Players line up multiple platforms on different levels to allow shaped blocks to pass through and once enough of them stack up, that particular shape closes off. A simple premise becomes more complicated as Meemoos begin to obstruct players’ paths, and butterflies attempt to steal blocks away. Players must swivel, roll, and boost their way through 45 puzzle-filled levels alone or with up to four friends in cooperative party mode play. For those with a more competitive spirit, Roogoo offers a two-player multiplayer mode over Xbox LIVE® where players battle to solve the same puzzle and can build up attacks to thwart their competitors’ efforts.

Age Of Conan Girls Get Accidental Boob Job

by misty on June 2nd, 2008

thumb463x_bd4c73064c7b5bce4c3bd37c6c5384ef

From kotaku.com as a result of the latest patch for Age Of Conan the female characters bust area have been altered. AOC forum user Gust even went as far as to provide photo evidence, seen above. No need to worry though folks, as Funcom promises things will soon be back to abnormal.

Funcom can confirm that some of the female models in the game have had the size of their breasts changed. This is due to an unintended change in data that was introduced in an earlier patch, data which controls the so-called morph values associated with character models and the size of their respective body parts. We are working on a fix for this and your breasts should be back to normal soon.

Looks like we aren’t alone; REAL ALIEN (VIDEO IMAGE)

by vipeness on May 30th, 2008

Well guys… pack your stuff; but don’t move to Colorado! An image from the video has been released from the Alien caught on video from a guys house. If you haven’t been around; a guy caught a real life alien on video peering into his 2 daughters room for 2 minutes. Below, is an image of from the video that was released to the press today. The general public will not see the video until a month from now, but the press was shown it today and their jaws are on the ground.

*** found a higher resolution from thedenverchannel.com

Video professionals and universities have seen the video and are deeming the video to be real. It isn’t related to video game related, but this deserves credit if the credit is real. And from the sounds of it, we might not be alone after all.

The world is abuzz about the brief video which supporters say reveals a short, gray extraterrestrial peering into the second-story window of a rural Nebraska home in 2003.

What did they see?

A classic E.T.-like creature, about 4 feet tall, with a narrow chin, a broad forehead and almond eyes.

Some people claimed to see its eyes and muscles move during the roughly two-minute video, which was briefly screened for reporters and the public at the Auraria campus today.

A skeptic said the being has a suspicious similarity to "Gray," the creature depicted in the classic 1957 movie "Earth vs. The Flying Saucers."

PlayStation Home Coming Oct-Dec 2008

by AJ on May 26th, 2008

According to the official PlayStation Home page over at uk.playstation.com, PlayStation Home is set for at the earliest an October release re-affirming the statements made by Kaz Hirai at PlayStation Day that Sony "Firmly believe they can deliver by this date".

PlayStation Home will enter Open beta stage around the end of June possibly early July for PlayStation users, we have no word on whether this is global or localised to a specific area.

Home was recently updated to version 0.8.3 and features more customisation features for your avatar within the world, along with an expansion to the environment in the form of an "Outside Space" moving away from the completely enclosed environment that Sony first showed us at GDC.

Home is certainly shaping up to be the first of many killer apps for PlayStation 3, if it launches alongside LittleBigPlanet i think it will push PlayStation 3 hardware sales way ahead of the Xbox 360.

If Sony fail to deliver Home, and announce another delay, they will lose much needed credibility within the PlayStation sector, something at this stage they simply cannot afford.

Strange Counter appears on Official Res Evil Website

A strange countdown timer has appeared on the Resident Evil website, at the moment its simply a video feed from a downed video camera.

Im presuming the owner of the camera was made into Zombie food.

The bottom of the two counters is going down steadily, no one knows what it is referring too, if anything at all.

Stay tuned for more information!

Revolutionary: Mario Kart Training Wheel

by obsoletepower on May 22nd, 2008

The Wii Wheel was supposed to make racing easy enough for anyone to jump right into a session of Mario Kart Wii with no prior experience with either traditional game controllers or the Wii Remote. When used properly, it works as expected. The trouble is that it’s not always used properly. Watching your parents try to get through Wario’s Gold Mine, you’ll notice that they’re sometimes holding the Wheel the wrong way, and it’s making them drive off the track into chasms of eternity. This observation led me to examine how Mario Kart Wii’s steering works and come up with a solution for keeping n00bs on track.

When I was writing the GlovePIE script for MotoGP 2, I wanted to be able to twist the Wii Remote for throttle, while tilting it to steer. I found a simple way to do that when I discovered that the Wiimote’s accelerometer is able to register linear changes on the Pitch axis while simultaneously being rotated on the Roll axis. I was curious if actual Wii games would use the flexibility of pitch sensing for steering in games, and found out that they do. Essentially, that means you can steer in Mario Kart Wii with the buttons facing skyward like Excite Truck, or play Excite Truck with the buttons facing your body, Mario Kart Wii-style.

The problem that the Wii Wheel introduces is it makes you want to rotate it around the same imaginary pivot point, even when you aren’t holding it in the correct, upright position. If you relax your arms and start trying to steer like a bus driver, it won’t work, because the Wii Remote’s accelerometer cannot sense motion on the Yaw axis. You could remove the mental block by taking the Wiimote out of it’s Wheel shell, but the Wiimote’s B button isn’t as easily accessible as the Wheel’s B button.

Another issue is that Wii novices generally don’t realize that they can make subtle movements to control games. Mario Karts steer more like real cars than carnival bumper cars, but you wouldn’t know it from the way your aunt tries to play. So perhaps, in addition to keeping the Wheel upright, a little restraining tension may help.

I went to Wal-mart and picked up a couple of 36-inch bungie cords and a plastic crate for less than $10 total.

1

The Mario Kart DS lanyard is optional

Threading the bungie cords between the spokes of the Wheel and hooking it in place in the center of the crate’s open end gives you something that looks too nerdy for words, but it works as intended, keeping the Wheel pivoting on its proper axis and registering your intentions to steer your kart.

2

Too loose and it won’t hold in place; Too tight and it won’t pivot

I placed it on a table to get a good shot with the camera, but it’s light enough to sit comfortably on your lap.

3

Take care not to put your bungies on your buttons (like I’ve done here)

I did find it was too bulky for the quick flipping motions required to do aerial tricks, but the purpose of this rig is too train novices in Wii driving. Once they’ve got a handle on the basics of control, you can pull them out of it and give them the freedom to do those Wheel flips.

Subtle movements for the win!

I really thought I had Wii driving down before I began this project, but yesterday I loaded up Excite Truck for the first time in months and I was easily beating my old scores and times by large margins. Excite Truck was the first game I ever played on the Wii, and I thought I was pretty good at it, but a little training (in minutes a day) did wonders for me.

Microsoft Explains "Gaywood" Ban

by obsoletepower on May 22nd, 2008

untitled

Late last night, we learned the story of Richard Gaywood, the not-so-happy Xbox Live user whose gamertag was banned. Since "RichardGaywood" was both the user’s gamertag as well as his legal, honest-to-goodness given name, Kotaku contacted Microsoft to learn the reason behind the ban.

Hit the jump for their response:

"We want the Xbox LIVE community to have the freedom to express themselves, but we also have a responsibility to create an inclusive, safe environment," said Microsoft’s Stephen Toulouse. "While it may be clear to some that Gaywood is a legitimate surname, it may not be obvious to other Xbox LIVE members. In this case, a complaint was filed by a member of the community, requiring the Xbox LIVE team to examine the gamertag within the context of the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use. Based on the these guidelines, it was necessary for the gamertag to change."

Recall Toulose also referred to the XBL Terms of Use in explaining why user "TheGAYERGamer" received a ban, stating, "Gamertags are visible to everyone and it would be hard for me to defend to a parent of a young child who saw it that the name did not contain content of a sexual nature."

Finally, Microsoft confirmed to us that Mr. Gaywood’s gamertag, like any other found to be in violation of the Terms of Use, will not be reinstated. Hope no other XBL users have legal names that might have the ill fortune to appear "sexual."

Jack Thompson Found Guilty!

by obsoletepower on May 22nd, 2008

JT-FA-2The judge who presided over Jack Thompson’s Florida Bar trial late last year has recommended that the controversial attorney be found guilty on 27 of 31 professional misconduct charges. The Florida Supreme Court must now rule on those recommendations.

In a report issued last week, Judge Dava Tunis writes:

After considering the arguments presented by the Florida Bar and the Respondent (Thompson), observing the Respondent’s demeanor during the nine-day trial proceedings, and carefully reviewing the record consisting of four volumes of exhibits totaling 1700 pages and approximately 2400 pages of transcribed testimony, the Court finds that the facts, circumstances and evidence presented regarding the Respondent’s conduct, supports a finding of guilt as to certain Florida Bar rules…

Tunis made 21 recommendations of guilt in relation to Thompson’s participation in Strickland vs. Sony, an Alabama case in which the anti-game attorney represented the families of two police officers and a police dispatcher slain by 18-year-old Grand Theft Auto player Devin Moore.

Tunis also recommended that Thompson be found guilty on four out of five counts relating to his 2006 attempt to have Rockstar’s Bully declared a public nuisance in a case before Miami Judge Ronald Friedman. An additional two guilty counts stemmed from a non-video game matter.

Among the Florida Bar offenses for which Judge Tunis has recommended a guilty verdict:

Judge Tunis’s full report to the Florida Supreme Court is due on September 2nd. In the meantime, a disciplinary hearing regarding possible sanctions against Thompson will be held before Judge Tunis on June 4th.

For his part, Thompson has made a number of allegations concerning Judge Tunis, including a complaint that state-mandated loyalty oaths were either not signed by the judge or were signed by others. Thompson also has filed federal lawsuits against the Florida Bar and Florida Supreme Court in relation to the Bar charges and other sanctions.

Alert! Microsoft Points scam sweeps Xbox Live

by vipeness on May 17th, 2008

AS POSTED EXACTLY FROM XBOX360FANBOY.com (THIS IS IMPORTANT NEWS)

While every major company in the world attempts to bang into your head that they will never ask for your account information sometimes people don’t listen.
Unfortunately a scam, which appears to have been around for some time, promises free Microsoft points when you log into your .net Passport account. This site, and any site that promises the same, is 100% fake and will only lead to a headache like the reader who sent this in who had 5000 MS points purchased with his credit card.
We know this isn’t the first, nor will it be the last, site to attempt to scam you but we hope to echo what you all should already know.
We won’t link the site itself, for fear of spreading the scam, but we would like to remind you of a few key things.

  1. Microsoft will only give points away during official contests that ALWAYS link directly back to a Microsoft site and those contests are always widely reported on X3F, Joystiq and other gaming sites
  2. Never, no matter what you’re promised, log into your account unless on officially sanctioned Xbox sites (Xbox.com, Bungie.net, ForzaMotorsport.net, etc.)
  3. Never give away your user name and password to anyone and remember Microsoft will never ask for this information
  4. Never give away your account details, including credit card information and mailing address

Do not get caught in a scam, who knows how deep the rabbit hole goes if you do.
Check out our visual guide to spotting fake Microsoft sites used in similar scams. This guide isn’t foolproof however, so just steer clear from anything that promises anything!

Activision’s Cabela’s Legendary Adventures to Bring Hunting’s Greatest Tales to Life

by vipeness on May 15th, 2008

Activision’s Cabela’s Legendary Adventures to Bring Hunting’s Greatest Tales to Life

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 14, 2008: Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today the upcoming release of Cabela’s Legendary Adventures for PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, and WiiTM. The latest title in the best-selling Cabela’s franchise will allow players to relive the greatest hunting stories ever told. The game will hit shelves in Fall 2008.
"In Cabela’s Legendary Adventures the missions are based on encounters with some of the most famous animals ever hunted in the wild," said Dave Oxford, Activision Publishing. "Focusing on these amazing once-in-a-lifetime stories has really allowed us to capture the essence of what hunting is all about - a quest for a legendary experience."

Players will hunt in different eras in search of trophies such as white-tailed deer, Yukon moose, Alaskan brown bear and Roosevelt elk in over ten of North America’s top hunting locations, including Kodiak Island, the Yukon and the Rocky Mountains. Each location in Cabela’s Legendary Adventures is a visually stunning open outdoor environment that encourages exploration and tactical variation. Shooting mechanics have been developed to reflect modern as well as historical hunting technology, so players relive the hunts complete with detail from specific time periods.

Under Cabela’s guidance, the firearms, tactics and gear in Cabela’s Legendary Adventures are as true to real life as a game will allow. The title will also include a large variety of additional hunts featuring over 30 species of other big game, small game, waterfowl, upland birds and turkey.

Cabela’s Legendary Adventures is scheduled for release in Fall 2008. For more information visit www.activision.com.

Petroglyph Studios: Upcoming MMOG Interview with Studio Co-Founder

by vipeness on May 11th, 2008

Over at the tentonhammer.com website, they have posted some news the Petroglyth Studios will be creating a MMO based Free to Play game. Check out some of tid bits below…

Ten Ton Hammer:  To start, the announcement that Petroglyph Studios is making a MMO is fairly big news, especially since that game has a very good chance of being in the real time strategy genre. Is it safe to assume that you’re making is an MMORTS, or is it too soon to tell?

Joe Bostic: While the game we’re making does cater to thousands of simultaneous players, it is not a typical MMO.    Our focus is on the action of gameplay, sharing challenges with friends, and working together to achieve a combined goal.   We like staying away from the MMO moniker because it is very strongly associated with World of Warcraft, and dozens of other games like it.   The game we’re focused on with True Games Interactive is a real-time, action-based game that will stand apart from the large crowd of similar titles all competing for the same players.

Ten Ton Hammer: Why did you opt to make a micro-transaction based game rather than follow the subscription based model?

Joe: For many people, a forced subscription equates to not even giving the game a chance, whether because they don’t have the means to pay a monthly fee, or they have a personal dislike for such a thing.   It also means that you have to decide whether you’re going to play the game enough to warrant that fee every month.  With a free-to-play micro-transaction system, you pay only what you want to pay, which is much friendlier to a lot of people out there.

Blizzard Opens Digital Download Store

by misty on May 6th, 2008

WC III   WC III Expansion   Starcraft

Heres some good news for fans of Blizzard according to shacknews.com Warcraft and StarCraft developer Blizzard has begun offering direct downloads of select PC titles via a new portion of its online store.   Although this is a working progress the beginning releases will catch plenty of peoples attention.  At present, the store’s digital download section only contains three listings: the StarCraft Anthology, Warcraft III, and the WarCraft III Frozen Throne expansion.

Also to sweeten the deal owners of certain Blizzard efforts can now register their CD keys on the site to add the titles to their Blizzard Account and download them for free at any time, though Diablo II-related downloads are not yet ready.

A new beta lottery program is also available, allowing registered users to be automatically entered into a drawing for beta access. However, no public betas are known to be underway.

At present, the company is known to be working on StarCraft II as well as a title only referred to as "an unannounced Next-Gen MMO," which some speculate to be a new Diablo game.

A list of PC titles that can be registered and downloaded from the Blizzard Store follows, as well as a description of the beta lottery.
