Street Fighter IV Exclusive 1st Time Console Photos and Video Gameplay and Tournament [PS3 vs. 360]
by vipeness on January 12th, 2009
** UPDATE: PS3 won the console war vs. 360 at the tournament!!!
- howdy shoryuken.com visitors; if you aren’t from there… head there for all your up-to-date street fighter appetite on the net.
I would like to say thank you to Capcom and Playstation for the hospitality they showed for all the players today. They put together an awesome event for players around the globe to compete in a tournament and bring their best movies and play Street Fighter IV on consoles for the first time. About 50+ players showed up wanting to see Street Fighter 4 for the first time, and to play in the tournament. We all crammed into the large suite at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, NV and begun our SF fantasies.
Pizza, Soda’s, Beers! Capcom and Sony Rock!!!; They took care of all our meals and made sure we had as much fun as we could possible get out of Street Fighter 4. The Capcom representative also demo’d off the inside of the 360 controller for Street Fighter and gave out some specs. (Price is still the same as it would be if you ordered it; Capcom has stated that they will not have replacement parts and not really wanting the users to mod the controller in any way; but they will give you a template to design your own design on your controller.)
First and Foremost; Street Fighter IV on PS3 is just like the arcades. It didn’t feel like I was playing on a console at all. The stations were setup awesomely and felt right. The controller, which I did not like; but others did were at every station and lined with research PS3 consoles. The one funny joke of the day, was the trophy system tell everyone, they didn’t earn a trophy at the top right screen. You can see that from the video below. Every time we would make a move, we would say; You really didn’t earn that. Back to the controller; The controller to me was too small for the handle. I couldn’t do my normal combos, uppercuts and fireballs with any characters. If Capcom can make it where I can install a standard edition handle, the stick would be awesome. I’ve been playing games and arcades for over 23 years; so I know how and what stick feel like; I just wasn’t feeling this controller.
TEASER VIDEO – Full video coming later today!!! (Jan. 11th 2009) with Capcom Announcements and behind the scenes of this event with new gameplay.

My name is not allowed in Hot Shots Golf ONLINE on PS3… read below

link to playstation 3 forum post
(please forgive the typos as I’m very tired right now) sorry
I have been under a lot of stress lately as a gamer. The only reason I state this, is when I got my PS3, it was for a few hot titles.
The one title that I’m speaking about is Hot Shot Golf on the PS3. I play this game all the time but when the game first came out,I got it at my local gamestop the moment they opened. I get home and play the game. Everything is fine. I even get my buddies to get the game too so we can play online together. As normal, I’m the host for pretty much all the games. So we all get in the same lobby and I created a default game. After creating a game, I get to the screen where it says join room, after I enter my room, I get booted from making my own online games. I get greeted with Cannot Make Online Room. It’s a PS3 system message. OK, so I try again and same thing. So I called Sony to see what the issue was.
I’m fairly familiar with networks, pcs, and other electronical devices enough to land a job in a very high volume IT job managing 300 computers. So My knowledge is great for this kind of stuff, and I walk through the steps with the PS3 technical support.
I follow the turn off machine, turn off cable modem, router the entire steps to verify I have an internet connection. After explaining calmly that I have completed the tests and that this is the only game that will not allow me to create a room for friends to play, they ask about the disk quality. I said that everything is fine, that I keep all my equipment very clean and in a non-destructive manner and everything I have is in brand new condition.
After walking through numerous tech support, the operator says it is my internet. I explain that I would like to speak to a supervisor in charge that can help me. I finally get to speak with a supervisor and they had no idea what the issue was. I explained that I could not create an online game for friends to join on Hot Shots Golf on the PS3. I also explain all the steps that I have gone through and explain that plugging the PS3 directly into the modem itself still does not fix the issue. I am then told to wait for a patch for the game. Please keep in mind, this was at the time the game was first released.
After 2 patches and 10 phone calls of the same exact issue, I now arrive here. I just called Sony again to be passed from a tech support agent, to supervisor, to a manager. The manager explained that the game was made by Sony and that they cover it, but the only thing he could help me with was Tips and Codes. I told him this has been an ongoing issue for some time now and it has never been resolved.
Now I explain to the manager that during a time that I played World of Warcraft, my screen name was banned from the game due to pornographic / sexual content. During that time, it took me over 1 1/2 months to get the issue straighten out and my name was allowed back to my character. This was after I had actually called Blizzard Ent. themselves and go through the operator and got myself to a game designer for World of Warcraft. He was able to get it straighten out very quickly after explaining to him about my name and how long I have had it. I have had my nickname for over 16+ years and even have a .com as well. I tried going into professional gaming, but I had my first son, and I decided to only play for fun. My .com is vipeness.com My nickname is VipeNess. The reason my name was banned, because someone that I killed in the World of Warcraft, I killed them 10 times in 1 night, no ganking or anything, just kept running into me reported my name as sexual and World of Warcraft admins saw in my name what resembled the word " p%$#$ " ha ha get it out now. Was news to me after talking to the game designer. Well, I had shown them proof that the name was not meant for that, it was lifted after explaining my history.
Now this is where it gets deeper. After doing a custom firmware update to my router, and trying it out again, I was still not able to create a game. I then called one more time, and got another manager. He explained it was my cable company blocking ports. Being the sucker, and being on the phone for 2 hours with the same processes all over again, I then call my ISP. And as you know it, they weren’t blocking any ports on my cable modem, even getting to the GUI interface of the modem itself. He explained to me, which I already knew that most companies play the cold call game and shift the customer back and forth until the customer gives up and doesn’t call anymore.
This is alot for a gamer to do for a game, but I love gaming and wanted to resolve this. I call Sony back again, (and keep in mind that I work so my work hours are from 12 to 15 hours a day and tech support to Sony is kind of hard to call at work) and get to another manager. I explain to him after all these months, that nothing has happened, no progress, and I explain to them again about my Blizzard story and he said… that SONY DOES NOT BLOCK NAMES especially MY NAME.
Well today, I was just sick of it, and made my wife an account on my PS3. Got her an account for the PSN, and tested out the Hot Shots Golf game and low and be hold, it WORKS! With much distressed, I call Sony and tell the manager that. He doesn’t believe me and says it is my ports AGAIN and that I need to call the tech support for my ISP. He was unable to handle anything and to email Sony on their website, which I have numerous amounts of time and with no luck, mostly automated messages, even when referencing to my case # through email. Just a heads up, case #’s thru email and tech support live are not the same.
So now I’m stuck, unable to do anything and if I want to play, I can not play with my name that I have had for 16+ years and don’t understand why no one will help me get to the bottom of this.. it’s very frustrating that Sony won’t give me any phone numbers, or real support for my issue, which I have figured out myself. My name " VipeNess " is not allowed on Hot Shots Golf, period! I can play everything else and make rooms, just not on Hot Shots Golf.
Can you please help me? I’ve run out of options and nothing else to do. Maybe a voice from someone can shed some light and point me in the right direction, besides changing my name. Please help and anything that any game dev can do would be awesome.
- VipeNess
Firmware v2.40 status (Issues)
by vipeness on July 2nd, 2008
Taken from official Playstation blog; please take a minute to overlook the issues going on with the 2.40 update released last night.
As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.
The 2.40 Playstation 3 Firmware is here!
by vipeness on July 1st, 2008
The moment all Playstation 3 owners have been waiting for. The 2.40 firmware has been released today, Tuesday around 10:00 pm pst. Earlier than we thought, the download took about 5 minutes to download, and 5 minutes to install. From what I’ve seen so far, this looks to put the PS3 back in the game with their new trophy system. You could say a copy from the achievement system from the 360, but great things deserved to be followed, and Sony seemed to follow closely and carefully and seemed to make this a great new use for gamers on the PS3. Go to your Update Manager, and update now to 2.40. Here are some of the new features below you can now use.
- In Game XMB
- Ability to text message friends from with in games now
- Google quick search icon added to XMB for quick internet access
- Trophy System
- New messaging system
- New Gamer Profiles
- Can compare Gamer Profiles and Trophies with other friends
- New Friends List (allowing addition of 100 friends on your list now)
- Play your custom music copied from cd’s in games now
Update: Super Stardust has patch that fully supports the new Trophy System
Support Games Below:
- BUZZ! Quiz TV
- LittleBigPlanet
- MotorStorm Pacific Rift
- NBA 09 - PS3
- PAIN
- PixelJunk Eden
- Resistance 2
- SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
- Warhawk
Here is some questions from the Playstation blog below
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/30/firmware-v240-faq/Hi again! It’s great to see the positive reaction to the unveiling of system software update v2.40. We can’t wait for you to finally go hands-on with XMB access in-game and the Trophy system – and it’s less than 2 days away. Not surprisingly, a number of you have posed questions both here and on other forums. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions.
Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future?
We are evaluating the opportunity to offer voice chat, but for this update, we wanted to focus on text messaging as the key priority for communications that our users have asked for.
Can you use the web browser in game?
No, you must exit the game before browsing the internet.
Will In-Game XMB come up during playback of PS2 games, Blu-Ray discs, and DVDs?
The XMB is an exclusive feature for PS3 game titles. Accessing the XMB during gameplay was the top request from our users, which we focused on for this update. However, we continually engage PS3 owners for feedback and will evaluate the opportunity to offer XMB access during movie playback in the future.
Can we go to the display settings and change anything there in-game (resolution, input, etc)?
No, you must exit the game before changing these settings.
Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?
Yes, sound output changes are supported.
Will we be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store while in-game?No, but you can view your downloads in progress.
Will we be able to stream music (either via media server or USB drive) for custom soundtracks or is it relegated to music stored on the HDD?
Currently only music stored on the HDD is accessible in games that support this feature. We’d also like to reiterate that Firmware v2.40 merely enables custom soundtracks. It’s up to developers to include this feature in upcoming games (or to patch existing ones).
Does 2.4 enable cross game invites? Will it down the line?
No, cross-game invites are not available in this system software update. We are evaluating opportunities to expand on the new features delivered in 2.40.
Will trophies be mandatory for all games release here on out?
We are working with developers to ensure that Trophies are supported across the board in the future.
Where is each player’s trophy stat info held? I am going to upgrade my hard drive and I don’t know if the trophies will still be on my account if I earn some and then get a new hard drive.
Trophies will be attached to users’ PSN ID. Trophy data needs to be synchronized to the online account on PSN to be transferred to the new PS3 system.
Will the patch automatically allocate unlocked trophies according to your saved files or would you have to do it again?
No, Trophies aren’t retroactive.
Can we view PSN profiles/Trophies from a PC using a Web browser? Will there be an API for web developers to access the PSN data, so online profiles can be created?
We’re evaluating these opportunities to expand where Trophies can be experienced.
Can you only compare trophies with friends that are online?
As long as a friend has a PSN account, you can compare trophies with them regardless of their online status.
Is there a limit to how many trophies the devs can put set by Sony?
There’s not a limit on number of trophies, but there’s a value assigned to each trophy. Developers must balance out the trophies that are available to stay within an overall value based on whether the game is considered large-scope or small-scope. Essentially, a user that has unlocked every trophy in one game would have the same level as a user that unlocked every trophy in another title, all titles (depending on scope) have the same overall impact on a users’ level.
Will new games have a cool little icon on the back saying “trophy compatible?”
We’re currently working on how Trophy support will be messaged to the consumer on our software packaging.
When you get a trophy, does it make a noise?
Currently, no.How quickly things can change - there *will* be a sound effect when you unlock a Trophy.
What is Eric’s favorite cheese?
Mozzarella
Once again, we will continue to evaluate opportunities to enhance the PLAYSTATION 3’s system software throughout the console’s life cycle. Consumer feedback has contributed greatly to the contents of Firmware v2.40, and continues to be appreciated. Don’t forget, this Firmware will be available for download on July 2nd.

Rumor: Wii-like PS3 controller used in focus test
by misty on June 2nd, 2008
According to ps3fanboy.com Playstation Lifestyle is claiming that a Wii-like PS3 controller was the subject of a secret PSU focus test. An e-mail sent back in January invited a few members of Sony’s invite-only group to join them for a paid focus test in ****** ****, California. (We’re assuming it’s Foster City, home of SCEA.)
The PS3 controllers were motion-sensitive and required use of a "mini-tripod that stood about 12 inches high." Mini-games, such as fencing, paintball and tennis were supposedly demonstrated. The devices were said to be "incredibly responsive and accurate."
While Sony does regularly conduct paid focus tests throughout the country, there simply isn’t enough tangible evidence to verify the authenticity of this rumor. If true, we wonder if PS3 fans really want more motion control in their lives … or does the SIXAXIS suffice?
BioShock Confirmed for PS3 (Holidays 2008)

Cue the I-told-you-so’s — the everlasting rumor about last year’s Xbox 360 hit BioShock popping up on the PS3 turns out to be true. According to the July issue of EGM, publisher 2K Games has confirmed that the underwater shooter is making the transition to Sony’s shores.
Still don’t believe us? Well, if you catch yourself a copy of the July issue (hitting subscribers as we speak, and on newsstands on June 3), you’ll get the full scoop on how the Xbox 360 will translate (including some potential graphical improvements) in time for the 2008 holiday season.
Along with a chat with BioShock’s new creative director Jordan Thomas (taking over the sunken series from creator Ken Levine), EGM has the first screens and info, including some fishy details about the future of Rapture

Activision’s Cabela’s Legendary Adventures to Bring Hunting’s Greatest Tales to Life
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 14, 2008: Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today the upcoming release of Cabela’s Legendary Adventures for PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, and WiiTM. The latest title in the best-selling Cabela’s franchise will allow players to relive the greatest hunting stories ever told. The game will hit shelves in Fall 2008.
"In Cabela’s Legendary Adventures the missions are based on encounters with some of the most famous animals ever hunted in the wild," said Dave Oxford, Activision Publishing. "Focusing on these amazing once-in-a-lifetime stories has really allowed us to capture the essence of what hunting is all about - a quest for a legendary experience."
Players will hunt in different eras in search of trophies such as white-tailed deer, Yukon moose, Alaskan brown bear and Roosevelt elk in over ten of North America’s top hunting locations, including Kodiak Island, the Yukon and the Rocky Mountains. Each location in Cabela’s Legendary Adventures is a visually stunning open outdoor environment that encourages exploration and tactical variation. Shooting mechanics have been developed to reflect modern as well as historical hunting technology, so players relive the hunts complete with detail from specific time periods.
Under Cabela’s guidance, the firearms, tactics and gear in Cabela’s Legendary Adventures are as true to real life as a game will allow. The title will also include a large variety of additional hunts featuring over 30 species of other big game, small game, waterfowl, upland birds and turkey.
Cabela’s Legendary Adventures is scheduled for release in Fall 2008. For more information visit www.activision.com.

GTA 4 Comparison Video 360 vs. PS3 and thoughts

I was trying to record a video to show the users on the internet the random freezing I am receiving on the PS3; Playstation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto 4, but it didn’t. So what did I do instead, create a quick comparison video of the same path starting from the same spot and ending in the same spot to show off the game to users. Check out the video below…

Anti-GTA Video: Time to get the bull**** boots!
by obsoletepower on May 3rd, 2008
Okay, I get the fact that people are concerned about the future leaders of our countries but damn it man, politicians have got to stop blaming video games for our government’s gross incompetence in their ability to provide our kids with a good educations system and more!
Get this guy, if I heard correctly when he mentioned "Your son, husband, boyfriend, whatever," he only named people of the male gender so his head just oozes stereotype and mass-media influence!
For the last time! It is not the world’s responsibility to censor everything because sexually-active 16 year olds that can’t keep their genitals in their pants long enough to not have children are not able to properly take care of their offspring because they aren’t even old enough to care for themselves!

GTA IV Lockup Solution: Disabling PSN?
by obsoletepower on May 3rd, 2008
Reader Captain Duck spotted a possible fix in the Something Awful forums: Disable your access to the Playstation Network. SA Goons (an accredited rank in GTA: Vice City) surmise that the game is looking for multiplayer connections "every two minutes or so," and if something is wrong there, voila, lockups.
Kotaku doesn’t vouch for the efficacy of this measure on all consoles but the SA commenters sure do:
"THIS TOTALLY Works."
"Yep, until they patch it, disabling internet access on the PS3 seems to do the job. It has worked fine for me, helped with a lot of the frustration I was having. Thanks guys"
Forums at GameFAQs and GameSpot seem to back it up too.
Looking at the date stamps to the comments, I realize this is about three days late, and I hope I’m not advertising something everyone already knows as breaking news. If you guys already figured this out in the comments, good on ya.
But … in the interest of useful info, there you go. Also, if anyone has different freeze problems or solutions, hit up the comments.

GTA IV Message for PS3 Users or Firehouse Pride?
by obsoletepower on May 2nd, 2008
Well after Marc finally explained to this idiot how to find it, I did. I must agree this looks very odd. Sure, it’s on the firehouse, so it is supposed to stand for Fire Department of Liberty City. Right? No harm in that.
However, Rockstar and GTA developers are not morons. Something this big and prominent can’t just be a “accident”.
The big question is, and i can’t confirm it, is does this look the same on the 360 version? If so, then maybe, just maybe it is just an unfortunate similarity.
So is this just firehouse pride or is it a secret message to PS3 users about the bonus content the 360 is getting.
Here is the pic, you decide.

Grand Theft Auto IV: The 6.24% Review
by obsoletepower on May 2nd, 2008
Grand Theft Auto IV has been in my possession since midnight Monday in a Los Angeles mini-mall. Because the game is rated M for Mature, there were a few eager teens milling around in the parking lot, trying to bribe cool adults to get them a copy. What’s worse? Buying teens cheap vodka or immersive sociopathic sandbox crime simulators?
With about 20 hours of gameplay (6.24% of the story and a lot of multiplayer) under my belt, here are some first impressions:
If you like endless cut scenes and game chatter spoken in grating Serbian accents, this is the game for you. (Also, The Rockstar creative team’s love affair with the number 69 is unabated.)
Unless I’m mistaken, when you kill someone, you can no longer leave cute little red footprint trails of victim blood behind you. However, when you run people over, less cute super-realistic blood stains appear on your windshield. (Exactly one stain per victim.)
For a game whose overall benefit to society is always in debate, there is a drunk driving simulator that’s truly terrifying. Perhaps terrifying enough to make the teens who bribed cool adults to buy them both M for Mature video games and cheap vodka think twice before getting behind the real-life wheel. (Kids, try getting actually drunk, then driving drunk in the game, and see what happens.)
There seems to be a lot of time in the game allocated to text messaging, going on the Internet, and online activities. I wasted my life in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas pretending to work out; now I’m wasting my life in GTA: IV pretending to surf the web.
The online multiplayer experience is outstanding. Exciting, chilling, and oh-I-just-got-run-over-by-a-garbage-truck messed up. Racing, sniping, exploding, hiding — the diversity of attack strategies available allows for a ride that will never get boring. Ultimately, the multiplayer for GTA: IV is so engaging it might actually overshadow the story. When I wake up in the morning, exhausted and sick with self-loathing from playing till three in the morning the night before, multiplayer is what calls me back. It’s so good, I may never get to 7%.

GTA 4 Sells ~2.5 million in the Americas on Day 1
by obsoletepower on May 1st, 2008
VG Chartz announced that according to their early sell-through data, Grand Theft Auto 4 has sold a record 2.5 million units in its first day of sales. GTA IV has been universally acclaimed upon release and the titles day 1 sales places the title in the upper echelon of industry hits - those that are universally loved by both critics and by casual gamers.
Data for the first day of GTA IV sales shows that the game sold roughly at a 6:4 ratio in favor of Xbox 360 to PS3 in the Americas. While that means the game sold better on Xbox 360, it had a higher attach rate on PS3 - the same story was the case in the UK according to an earlier report by Chart Track.
At $60 per unit for the standard game and $90 for the special edition and around 1/4 of all games bought being at the higher price, Rockstar is looking at around $170 million in day one Americas revenue. For comparison, Microsoft stated that Halo 3 saw $170 million in sales revenue day one so it seems at this point the combined Xbox 360 and PS3 sales for GTA IV are about on par with Halo 3.
Super Smash Brothers Brawl recently sold over 900,000 units in the Americas day one and went on to sell almost 1.6 million units week one. A similar pattern for GTA IV would push the title to over 4 million units in the Americas for week one - we expect the title to have a drop off rate more akin to Smash Brothers Brawl than Halo 3.
Sales have also been brisk in Europe, along with Chart Tracks report of 600,000 copies sold in the UK in one day, VG Chartz estimates that around 1.7 million units were sold across Europe and others on day one - the format split is roughly a mirror image of the Americas, with around 60% of all European sales being on PS3.
Day one sales for Europe and the Americas combined bring GTA IV to 4.2 million units worldwide, a staggering number, both in units and in revenue.
Stay tuned for more sales updates as the week progresses.

Rockstar Support Feels Terrible for GTA Lock-ups
by obsoletepower on April 29th, 2008
Earlier today, Kotaku broke the news that some Grand Theft Auto IV gamers were having problems with the game on both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Here is the following article as it was done by Kotaku:
For them, the game was freezing up during the introductory cut-scene, something that neither I nor Mike experienced during our time with the game on both systems. To be clear, we have no idea how widespread the problem is, but it’s certainly on Rockstar’s radar and making the rounds both in our tips line and on forums.
Rockstar declined to comment on the issue officially, so I went to the phone and called up Rockstar Support to see what they had to say about the problem.
A very friendly, and obviously unhappy, fellow answered the phone who, after thanking me for not yelling at him and apologizing profusely for the problem, spilled quite a bit of beans on the issue:
The man told me that the problem is apparently only effecting the 60 GB version of the Playstation 3, but that it didn’t matter than my particular console was a launch console (Yes, I told a little white lie and said my copy was locking up.) He said the problem is not across the board for the 60GB PS3s but rather only impacts some, so their tech folks are working around the clock to try and figure out what is causing the issue.
He did ask me to make sure that my harddrive wasn’t full and that I had the latest firmware update, but confessed that that really isn’t what’s causing most of the problem. He also said that the Xbox 360 is having the "exact same problem," which has further stumped their tech folks.
I asked him if wiping the harddrive and reinstalling the PS3 version would help, as seen on the PS forums, he said I could try but that he hadn’t heard of it helping a single person.
He ended the call by saying that they really have no idea when a fix will be coming because they can’t figure out what is exactly causing the problem and then once more apologized.
"I feel terrible about this."
If only more support folks were as empathetic and genuinely concerned about the problems their customers are going through.

GTA IV expected to sell 9 million copies at launch
by obsoletepower on April 28th, 2008
LOS ANGELES (AP) — There’s no Burger King tie-in or special flavor of Mountain Dew. No commercial directed by Peter Jackson, or even an action figure.
The run-up to "Grand Theft Auto IV" has been considerably less ballyhooed than last year’s over-the-top "Halo 3" debut. Yet when "GTA IV" parks on store shelves on April 29, the latest entry in the controversial video game franchise could be the most lucrative launch in entertainment history — and one that many people may not even know about.
Analysts predict Take-Two Interactive Software and Rockstar Games’ open-world, action-driving game will easily top last year’s record-breaking $300 million first-week sales of Microsoft and Bungee Studios’ first-person shooter "Halo 3" — and without a similar marketing bonanza.
With the launch of "GTA IV" on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Rockstar is seemingly steering in one direction: the downlow.
"Rockstar wants to control the message all the time," says Sam Kennedy, editorial director for the gaming site 1UP.com. "They want this to be seen and perceived exactly the way they want. That’s why — outside of the official trailers they released — people haven’t seen a lot of gameplay footage in advance of ‘GTA IV’ shipping. They want to build that hype."
Take-Two and Rockstar declined to comment for this story, but following a 90-minute demonstration of the game in January, "GTA IV" writer and Rockstar vice president Dan Houser told The Associated Press that the infamous game developer, who’s also responsible for the "Manhunt" and "Bully" games, was being overly protective for one very important reason.
"We want people to be really excited and not know everything by the time they play the game," said Houser. "Of course, we want them to understand what they’re buying, but we want there to be surprises along the way."
The desire for intel about "GTA IV" has been mounting since the game was announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2006 and again in August when Take-Two revealed "GTA IV" would be delayed until 2008. Other than four popular online trailers and some embargoed press previews, there hasn’t been much information.
The silent treatment is a savvy business move, according to Steve Fowler, vice president of strategy for the Ayzenberg Group, a company that specializes in interactive entertainment advertising and marketing. Fowler worked as a product manager on the original "Halo."
"’Halo 3′ took the approach of going after a less core consumer, but they had an ulterior motive," says Fowler. "Microsoft was using ‘Halo 3,’ their biggest property, to try and sell more Xbox 360s. Take-Two and Rockstar are free of that constriction because ‘GTA IV’ is on both platforms, so they’re only motivated to be true to what their game is and sell copies of their game."
Thus far, Rockstar’s advertising campaign has consisted of several outdoor elements — billboards, bus wraps, building murals, phony wanted posters — spread across North America and Europe as well as a few viral videos featuring satirical commercials for fictitious "GTA" businesses posted online. GameStop and Microsoft have also aired their own TV commercials featuring the game.
The less-is-more approach might also have something to do with the controversial series’ M-rated content. "GTA IV" anti-hero Niko Bellic, an imigrant-turned-gangster from Eastern Europe, isn’t exactly one of the Mario Brothers. As Bellic, players can hijack cars, earn cash for criminal activities, flee from police, drive drunk, kill innocent bystanders and patronize strip clubs.
"If you look at their marketing, that’s not a selling point at all," says Fowler. "They’ve gone with this comic book look and feel. It’s not about graphic violence. It’s not about profanity. It’s more about the feeling, expression and the emotional attachment to the characters and the world."
The drama extends beyond Liberty City, the game’s fictional locale, and into the real world. Video game publisher Take-Two, which owns Rockstar, has been subject to a hostile takeover bid from Electronic Arts since February. Take-Two has been holding out, refusing to enter formal talks with EA or any other suitor until April 30, the day after "GTA IV" goes on sale.
Huge first-day "GTA IV" sales could certainly boost the value of Take-Two’s shares. The lack of a "Halo 3"-sized advertising campaign isn’t expected to affect sales, according to video game analysts. Unlike the Xbox 360-exclusive "Halo 3," the ninth "GTA" game is being simultaneously released for Sony’s and Microsoft’s consoles, a first for the 10-year-old gaming franchise.
"The addressable market at launch is about 24 million consoles," says Michael Pachter, video game analyst at Wedbush Morgan. "So how many will sell in the first week or month or few months? Nine million. That’s the number. That’s about a 35 percent attach rate. By year’s end, it’ll be somewhere between 11 and 13 million because more consoles will be sold before the holidays."
By comparison, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End," which had the highest grossing film debut in 2007, fleeced $404 million in its first six days around the world. However, a movie ticket is significantly less than the $59.99 price tag for "GTA IV." And software sales are usually less concerned with opening week figures, according to Pachter.
"Opening week doesn’t have any bearing on lifetime sales," says Pachter. "With box office, three to five times opening weekend sales is what movies usually do. Games can slip under the radar and be slow and steady sellers like ‘Wii Fit’ will be or highly anticipated like ‘GTA IV’ and literally sell half of their lifetime units in the first week."
Such sales would beat the record held by "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," the previous "GTA" console game that sold over 9 million copies when it was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004, according to NPD Group, which tracks video game sales. To meet the demand, retailers such as GameStop and Best Buy are opening their doors at midnight for special "GTA IV" launch events.
"I would expect April to be a monster sales month for the video game industry, one that is likely to break all sorts of previous records," says Anita Frazier, video game analyst for NPD Group. "We release our April sales data on May 15, and I get goosebumps thinking of the numbers we’ll see on that day."

Prince of Persia Prodigy confirmed
by obsoletepower on April 27th, 2008
Recently snooping enthusiasts uncovered the trademarking of ‘Prodigy’ for the Ubisoft platforming franchise.
Now according to the Ubisoft forum community a mysterious website has emerged which users were taken to after visiting the suspected official sites address.
There’s mystery abound, well sorta. The site featured swirling liquid behind a word in Arabic, which the Ubi community believes translated into "Minjar" meaning telescope in English.
The publisher hasn’t confirmed the official title for next year’s latest Prince of Persia, a number of people have reported that visiting www.princeofpersiaprodigy.com lead you to this teasing site but it no longer does.
Ubisoft community voice "UbiRazz" has apparently not denied the site being linked with Prodigy and left a teasing "give it time" remark, in a thread brainstorming speculation.

Also I had a little bit of a play on it today while sorting stuff out in the office, heres a little review nothing deep just some bits and bob
Riiight then,
Managed to get a few hours in today of gameplay when I was in work in between sortting everything out before tuesday (call it the calm before the storm) ermmm had a bash on PS3 and 360 noticable differences, PS3 looks nicer and the draw distance is slightly better but because of this frame rate struggles sometimes but its hardly noticable, the 360 version as i said its virtually like splitting hairs to compare the 2 but the controlls feel easier on the 360 and it does seem to run smoother, up to now ive just done a tour of the areas available to explore.
Generally other things to report are that you feel like you have alot more control of what is going on with your character and vehicles during gameplay, although depending what car your in things can sometimes slide out of control and get pretty annoying making you crash into a wall at full speed and go flying through your windshield which is a blast unless your not taking much notice of your health then you die (seemed to happen to me alot today but it is fun ) didnt have a go of many guns apart from the pistol but still good fun the new aiming mode is pretty top notch, I thought it was going to be halo-esc but it isnt it makes it its own, police (pigs) are a nightmare in this one, if you run a toll youll get a star on you they are also pretty harsh instead of been able to fight them off like in other games they can usually grab you before you have the chance and put a gun to your head but if youve been a naughty boy expect to get shot up big style even if your in a car, ohhh getting back onto the cars get ready for some drool worthy crashes its not exactly burnout but the realtime damage on cars is awsome!
Anyways ill shut up ive tried to give you a brief run through of things ive came across and ive tried my best not to ruin things for you all by spoiling sh!t.
So yeh hope you all enjoy on tuesday and get some marley funk tuned in on the car radio!
Peace!
As you can see, it’s a beautiful list of beginning stuff to get ready for the game come tomorrow night (midnight for the slow) Stay tuned to http://www.thegamershow.com as we prepare for the biggest game this decade has to offer.
